Where Should I Place My RD17 Radon Detector?
Proper placement helps improve measurement reliability and provides a better understanding of indoor radon conditions.
Recommended Locations
The RD17 is suitable for:
✓ Basements
✓ Bedrooms
✓ Living rooms
✓ Home offices
✓ Apartments
✓ RVs
✓ Other frequently occupied indoor areas
For a new home, consider monitoring before moving in and continuing after occupancy to understand long-term indoor radon trends.
Placement Recommendations
For best performance:
- Place the detector in an open area with normal indoor airflow
- Keep the air inlet unobstructed
- Place the device approximately at breathing level when possible
- Allow the detector to remain in the same location during monitoring for consistent readings
Avoid These Locations
Avoid placing the RD17:
✕ Near windows, doors, or strong drafts
✕ Directly beside fans, air conditioners, or vents
✕ Inside cabinets, closets, or enclosed spaces
✕ Near high heat sources
✕ In areas with excessive moisture or water exposure
Basement Monitoring Tips
Basements are common areas for radon monitoring because radon can enter buildings through foundations.
For basement testing:
- Place the RD17 in the lowest regularly occupied area
- Keep doors and windows closed as normally used
- Avoid moving the device frequently during measurement
Longer monitoring periods generally provide a better picture of indoor radon conditions.
